A business term loan is a lump sum repaid in scheduled installments over a set term, often used for expansion, build-outs or refinancing. Ravenside Lending, a small-business funding broker in Macon, GA, explains amortization, balloon payments and what partners review, then presents Middle Georgia requests to lending partners, which make the credit decision and set rates and terms.

Mechanics of a business term loan
You receive the full amount at closing and repay it in regular installments, usually monthly, until the term ends. The rate may be fixed for the life of the loan or variable, moving with a benchmark. The term is agreed at the start, and the schedule tells you exactly how many payments remain at any point.
Because the money arrives at once and interest begins immediately, a term loan fits a cost that is known and immediate. If the spending will be spread over months in uneven amounts, a business line of credit is often a closer match.
Amortization on a term loan, step by step
Amortization describes how every installment divides between interest and principal. Early in the term, most of each payment goes to interest because the balance is large. As the balance falls, the interest share shrinks and more of each payment reduces principal. The payment amount stays the same on a fixed-rate loan; only the split changes.
Request the complete amortization table from the partner. It shows the balance after every payment, which tells you what it would cost to pay the loan off early and how quickly you build equity in whatever the loan bought.
What a balloon payment is on a commercial loan
Some business loans are amortized over a long period but come due sooner. The payments are calculated as if the loan ran, say, its full amortization period, yet the remaining balance falls due in one lump sum at maturity. The lump sum owed at that point is called the balloon. It keeps the regular payment lower but leaves a large obligation at the end, which usually has to be refinanced or paid from savings.
Before signing, confirm whether the loan has a balloon, how large it will be and what happens if refinancing is not available when it comes due.
Using a term loan to expand in Middle Georgia
Expansion is the most common reason owners ask about term loans. Typical projects include a dining room renovation, a second clinic location, fitting out a leased storefront, or buying out a supplier's equipment as part of a larger contract. In Macon-Bibb County, a new business location or a construction project starts with the county's zoning and permitting steps; the Macon-Bibb business license guide lists the offices involved.
For construction-heavy projects, local building activity is worth knowing. Bibb County authorized 143 new privately owned housing units in 2025, 154 in 2024 and 147 in 2023, and all 143 units in 2025 were single-family (U.S. Census Bureau, Building Permits Survey). These are residential permits, not a measure of commercial work.
Records a term loan partner reviews
- Two to three years of tax returns and financial statements, if the business has them.
- Recent business bank statements showing deposits and existing payments.
- The project itself: a contractor's estimate, a lease, an equipment quote or a purchase agreement.
- Existing debt and any liens already filed against the business.
- Owner credit and, often, a personal guarantee.
The Georgia loan checklist walks through preparing each of these.
SBA loans in Georgia
SBA-backed loans are made by participating lenders, with the Small Business Administration standing behind part of the loan, and they come with their own eligibility rules and paperwork. Ravenside Lending does not arrange SBA loans. The UGA SBDC in Macon lists help with loan packages and financing options among its services; the Middle Georgia resources guide has its address and the counties it serves.
Term loan, or equipment financing instead?
If the main purchase is a piece of equipment, equipment financing often makes more sense: the equipment itself secures the debt, and the term is set to its working life. A term loan is the broader tool for projects that mix labor, materials and fixtures. The four steps show how a request moves once you decide.
